The superintendent serves as the CEO of the school district, appointed by the board of trustees. While voters in Oconee County still elect a superintendent, the authority of this position was greatly diminished by the board in January 2002. The board's new policy places the principal authority for day-to-day operations of the school with a superintendent appointed by the board.
