Convention Highlights

Establishing and maintaining meaningful two-way communications among schools, parents, and the community is a key characteristic of effective involvement that can lead to higher student achievement. School board members provide a direct connection to district stakeholders and play a critical role in building supportive relationships between the schools and community. School boards must engage the public to ensure that their districts' messages are strengthened and heard by schools and communities.
SCSBA's 2012 annual convention, the largest training event of the year, will bring together outstanding experts and practitioners in communication and leadership. You don't want to miss this one!

New Board Orientation, Thursday, February 23
SCSBA's workshop for newly-elected or appointed board members will be held from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. There is no cost for new board members. All others must pay a $100 registration fee, which includes lunch. State law requires all new board members to attend orientation within one year of being elected to the school board. This is your chance to comply with state law, meet incoming new board members, and enjoy your first Annual Convention.

Board Chair Workshop, Thursday, February 23
Experienced and new board chairs will spend the day gaining leadership training and skills to effectively lead and manage. The workshop is from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and feature sessions to address the demanding issues that come with the top position. The workshop is also open to superintendents and other interested board members. The registration fee is $110, which includes lunch.

General sessions and special interest workshops
From the four general session keynote speakers to "Share the success" workshops, the convention features information on increasing student achievement, reaching diverse populations, effective board operations, innovative programs and more.

Trade show
Take home a wealth of ideas and product information from the more than 70 exhibitors including architectural firms, food service providers, suppliers of instructional materials, and more. Trade show hours are Friday, 7:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. and Saturday, 7:30 - 11:30 a.m.

Student performances
Student musicians and vocalists will showcase their talents during general sessions and the Saturday evening social. Those selected and scheduled to perform are the Ronald E. McNair Middle School Show Choir, Florence Three Schools; Andrew Jackson Show Choir, Lancaster County Schools; Pendleton High School Singers, Anderson Four Schools; The Rhythmic Raiders, Florence Two Schools; Codi Lester, Newberry County Schools; Orangeburg-Wilkinson Jazz Combo, Orangeburg Consolidated Five Schools; Lake City High School Ensemble, Florence Three Schools; and the School Board Member Band.

Dress code
Dress code, including the Saturday evening social, throughout the convention is casual. Dressing in layers is recommended as some meeting rooms may be a little cool.

Saturday evening social

Before heading out to dinner, join colleagues, convention speakers and SCSBA staff from 5 to 8 p.m. for a casual, relaxed evening of entertainment, networking, and a delicious buffet.
