Convention Highlights

In 1999, delegates from the 85 school boards in South Carolina unanimously approved eight board standards and seven standards for board members. South Carolina joined two other states in adopting standards for school boards and was the only state to have standards specifically for board members. These standards – the ingredients to effective and high impact school boards – will come to life at this year’s SCSBA annual convention.
Four days of outstanding speakers and workshops, convention participants will focus on the ingredients for creating and sustaining governing excellence through boards that:
• function as higher-impact governing bodies by addressing the really critical strategic and policy issues facing their districts
• benefit from a positive district image through effective public relations strategies and creative collaboration between the superintendent and board chair
• enjoy close, positive and productive working relationships without the dysfunctional stresses and strains
The largest professional development event of the year, SCSBA annual convention provides comprehensive, leadership development activities specifically for building strong and effective board and superintendent teams. You don’t want to miss this one.

New Board Orientation, Thursday, February 24
SCSBA’s workshop for newly-elected or appointed board members will be held from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. There is no cost for new board members. All others must pay a $100 registration fee, which includes lunch. State law requires all new board members to attend New Board Orientation within one year of being elected or appointed. Attendance not only meets statutory compliance, it offers new members a chance to meet and network with incoming board members across the state during SCSBA’s largest professional development opportunity of the year at the annual convention.

Board Chair Workshop, Thursday, February 24
Experienced and new board chairs alike will have a full day of leadership learning and skill building activities from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Topics focus on strategies and programs to address the demanding issues that come with the top position. The $110 registration fee includes lunch. The workshop is also open to superintendents and other interested board members.

General sessions and special interest workshops
From the four general session keynote speakers to special interest workshops, the convention features information on increasing student achievement, reaching diverse populations, effective board operations, innovative programs and more.

Trade show
Take home a wealth of ideas and product information from the more than 70 exhibitors including architectural firms, food service providers, suppliers of instructional materials, and more. Trade show hours are Friday, 7:30 - 11 a.m. and 12:15 - 3:30 p.m. and Saturday, 7:30 - 11:30 a.m.

Student performances
Student musicians, vocalists and actors will showcase their talents throughout the convention. Those scheduled to perform include the Broome High School Jazz Ensemble (Spartanburg Three Schools), Hand Middle School Treble Choir (Richland One Schools), Carver-Edisto Middle School Stars-in-Training Dramatic Ensemble (Orangeburg Consolidated Four Schools), The Harmonizing Hurricanes (Jasper County Schools) and TDK Mime Ministry (Williamsburg County Schools).

Dress code
Convention dress code, including the Saturday evening reception, is casual. Dressing in layers is recommended as some meeting rooms may be a little cool.

Saturday evening reception

Before heading out to dinner, join colleagues, convention speakers, and SCSBA staff from 5 to 6:30 p.m. for a casual, relaxed evening of entertainment, networking, and of course, delicious, heavy hors douvres. The wonderful student entertainers of the Carver-Edisto Middle School (Orangeburg Consolidated Four) Stars-in-Training Dramatic Ensemble and The Harmonizing Hurricanes from Jasper County Schools will entertain reception goers.

NOTE: Each convention registration includes one reception wristband. However, in order to receive your wristband at registration, you must RSVP your attendance with your district secretary/clerk in advance. An attendance sheet compiled by the district secretary/clerk ensures your wristband(s) at registration.

Download reception attendance sheet (Word)

Additional reception wristbands
Additional wristbands are available for $50 each but must be reserved on the registration form and included on the district’s attendance sheet.
